Decks questions

Composite or hardwood: which should I choose in Cairns?
Composite costs more up front and less over ten years: no oiling, no cupping, no splinters, and it shrugs off humidity. Hardwood looks and feels better underfoot and can be sanded and re-oiled for decades if you keep up with it. Around a pool most people go composite. Matt will show you samples of both on site.
Do I need council approval for a deck?
Often yes. In Queensland a deck generally needs building approval if it is more than a metre off the ground or larger than a small footprint, and always if it has a roof. We tell you what your block needs before you commit, and where drawings, engineering or certification are required we take care of them as part of the job.
How long does a deck take to build?
A ground-level deck of average size is usually a one-to-two-week job once materials are on site. Elevated decks and decks with roofs take longer because of footings and any approvals. You get a start date and a finish date in writing.
Can you fix my existing deck instead of replacing it?
If the joists and bearers are sound, yes: we can replace boards, re-fix loose sections and re-oil. If the frame has rot or termite damage we will tell you, because patching a bad frame is money wasted. Coming out to look and quoting is free.
