Pergolas questions

Does a pergola need approval?
A roofed or louvred pergola usually does. A small open pergola often does not, but the rules depend on size, height and how close it is to a boundary. Either way, design, drafting, engineering and certification are part of our pergola package, so you get approved plans without chasing anyone.
Louvred or fixed roof?
Louvres give you control: open on a still night, closed in a downpour. A fixed insulated roof is cheaper and cooler underneath in the middle of the day. It comes down to how you use the space, and Matt will talk it through on site.
Can a pergola go over an existing deck or paving?
Usually. We check what is under the surface and whether the existing slab or deck frame can take the post loads. If it cannot, we cut in proper footings and make good around them.
